Siama's Congo Music: Feel-good sounds from the heart of Africa

Back in Africa, Congolese guitarman Siama Matuzungidi recorded hundreds of hits and toured the globe with beloved soukous artists, helping to popularize soukous music  throughout the African diaspora. (BIO) Now based in Minneapolis and a McKnight Fellow, Siama's latest album ("Rivers - from the Congo to the Mississippi") is garnering attention the world-over, he's preparing to release an album of new kids' songs and recently a special PBS show about Siama's life and music began broadcasting nationwide. (View it here). In addition to soukous, Siama's exploring traditional Bakongo and Mbaka music and he's picked up the mbira and belafon (African thumb piano and marimba).
  • LIVE PERFORMANCE 
    Siama has performed at the Cedar Cultural Center, The Ordway Theatre for the Performing Arts, 2017 Women's March/MN Capital (for 100,000), Bedlam, Open Eye, Pangea World and Mixed Blood theaters, First Avenue, MN State Fair, Lowertown Guitar Festival, Harriet Bandshell, American Folk Festival in Nashville, TN, Winnipeg Folk Festival, MSP Airport and many other special venues and he can be enlisted to play at theaters, festivals, fundraisers, corporate events or private parties. 
     
  • KIDS' PROGRAM (testimonials and info)
    Siama and his partner Dallas Johnson host a fun, interactive music program for kids and families where they play catchy songs and encourage everyone to sing along, dance and play handheld percussion instruments while learning fun African signing styles like yodeling and call-and-response.

    This program can be a performance, Siama's Instrument Petting Zoo (for events with a roving-type format) or an African Music Class. 
    (BTW If you're using a grant, Siama is on the teaching artist roster of MN State Arts Board.)

    They've presented kids' programs at Minneapolis Institute of Art, MacPhail Center for Music, Intermedia Arts, The Ordway/Flint Hill's Children's Festival, Global Market's Wee Wednesdays, Dowling Environmental School, Urban Arts Academy, St. Paul City School, Nokomis, W 7th, Rondo and Franklin Ave libraries, Winona Rec Center and many other places. They're available for events, festivals, school and library programs
    and kids' birthday parties.

     
  • CLASSES for ADULT and YOUNG ADULTS 
    Siama and Dallas teach an African Singing Class and a Songwriting Workshop.

    They've taught at HUGE Improv Theatre in Minneapolis, Woodland Hills Residence in Duluth (for teenage young men) and for young people at Franklin Library. It's a great fit for libraries, lifelong learning programs, teenage/youth programs, hospital or residence settings, to build a sense of community, to surprise a loved one with a special song, etc,
